Country vs City

I have discovered that the old saying is true. "You can take the girl out of the country but you can't take the country out of the girl." So true. Sixteen months ago I moved to the big city of Birmingham. I had never left my home in Blount county and decided I would venture out and experience a new lifestyle. If anyone knows Birmingham they know all about the traffic. It has been an ordeal almost everyday just trying to get somewhere on the interstate. Occasionally you may a good day of semi- clear roads but almost always there are traffic jams, wrecks, and crazy drivers that make you wonder where they got their drivers license. I have enjoyed the convenience of stores and such. When you live in the country, you may have to drive a few miles before you get to your nearest store. So living in the city has its few pluses until you factor in the noise, the crime, and the fact the everything you do is permitted. Every morning I wake up to the sound of sirens. Police, fire, and ambulance. I live in a condominium but have acquired a house back in the country. Home sweet home. When I walk outside this is what I see now: Joggers, cars, people outside working on landscape, bushes etc. Sounds ok so far right? Well I will tell you it's not. Privacy. That is what's lacking. I can't step out the front door without the world seeing me. I'm  the kind of girl who likes to drink her coffee on the front porch in my robe and not worry about who is going to be staring. Also besides the privacy there are so many other downfalls to living in the city. Well as I've mentioned I live in a condominium. So you're not allowed to keep but two vehicles, can't have utility trailers, no where to put extra storage, no yard which means no homegrown veggies, and so many others. So I guess you can see who the winner is. I love my country living!!! 

Extra unordinary

I was just sitting here thinking and wondering if anyone out there is like me. I am forty years young and I wish I could turn back time. Back to a time when life was so much simpler. Days of having something to look forward to such as summertime. Going swimming, camping, grilling, riding bikes etc. In those days we didn't take anything for granted. You knew when it was time to get up because the roosters would be crowing and you never had to worry about theft because you had your trusty old blue tick to let you know there was trouble. You protected yourself with a gun but usually never had to use it. Never really worried about break-ins. You and your friends could ride for miles up the road on your bikes and nobody was scared of kidnapping. We planted vegetables in our garden and nothing was better than a tomato and mayo sandwich in the summer. At night we would try to catch lightning bugs and some days go craw dad hunting. We didn't sit in front of a television like zombies. We did watch tv but it was for short periods at a time. We usually would stay outside from early morning to late night or until mom called us in. We didn't have a lot of money but we were happy with what we had. Christmas and birthdays were special because those were the only times of the year we got presents. Unlike today's kids that get something new every time they go to the store. We sat down together as a family to eat. We didn't run from fast food to fast food all the time. My mother prepared home cooked meals and we didn't go without.
I may sound old fashioned and maybe I am but I believe technology is the death of the simple life. Don't get me wrong. I myself enjoy my computer and cell phone but i don't worship it. How often do you go out and see people glued to their cellphones? How many people really talk on the phone anymore ? They don't they text. We have become a world of silent words. Words on a screen with no voice to speak them. Words that can never express an emotion like a person to person conversation. We also have become a world of adultery. The cellphone , the computer, texting, have all made it easier to commit adultery. I know this from first hand experience. There are so many dating sites available also with a high percentage of people claiming to be single when in fact they are married. There is even a site that helps you have an affair. How preposterous. In a world of Jerry springer, Justin Beiber, Miley Cyrus , reality television and obamacare what is the old fashioned simple heart to do?
